RACE FOR INDUSTRIAL PEACE: LAGUNA FUN RUN GENERATES FUNDS FOR CHILD LABOR ADVOCACY

For Dennis Dimaranan and his co-workers of Surtec Philippines, it was worth the effort of waking up early at dawn, donning running shoes and sweating it out running around the designated route around buildings and structures inside Toyota Motors Philippines Plant at Sta. Rosa City, Laguna. “Masaya po kami kasikasama kami sa fun run , nag enjoy na kami, nakatulong pa kami” he happily remarked while resting and preparing to leave after finishing their run. Dennis and 14 of his co workers were sponsored by his company as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Before starting the race, the runners warmed up to the beat of fast music while following the steps of a zumba instructor. Gun start was at 6 am and the runners followed the route designated by Race Director Jimmy Hembra of Toyota Motors Philippines Corporation. The route took the runners around Toyota’s sprawling 82 hectares special economic zone breathing fresh air and enjoying the scenery of green trees and chirping birds. Staff from the DOLE Laguna Provincial Office acted as marshals and support personnel to ensure the smooth flow of the event.

DOLE Laguna Provincial Office Director Milagros R. Mata was happy that a lot of runners joined the event. PD Mata stated that “ after two months of preparation in partnership with host-company Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMPC), represented by Mr. Nelson O. Manglo, Manager, Affiliate Support and Events, Travel Sections, HRD, together with Mr. Ramil Mailom, union president and Mr. Narciso Lozano, Jr., Labor Management Council Chairman, liaisoning with their respective BODs between the Laguna Labor Management Council, Inc. and DOLE Laguna successfully carried out the fun run activity with 316 registrants across the three race categories namely: 3K, 5K, and 10K”.

It is indeed a fun way to raise funds for our anti-child labor advocacy and at the same time promote industrial peace. It is such a happy sight to see both labor and management running together for a common cause,” PD Mata added.

A total of 27 participating companies which include three government agencies joined the event. HGST, Phils., Corp. with 56 runners is the biggest group while three other companies each with 20 runners namely, Central Service Cooperative, Motorcentral Group, and STMicroelectronics.
