Sixty other child laborers also received the educational packages. The 66 child laborers who arrived with their parents are residents of Barangays Sta. Maria, Pinagbayanan, Pinagkamaligan, Sabang Uno, Sabang Dos and Kinalin Ibaba.
The symbolic turning over of the child laborers “work implements” or “tools of the trade” is the highlight of the Department of Labor and Employment’s “Pagtutulungan, Pagpapalaya sa mga Batang Manggagawa” – a nation-wide campaign for a child labor-free barangays – which was launch simultaneously at the national and regional level last May 18, 2012, 9:00 am – 12:00nn.
The DOLE Regional Office IV-A QPO kicked-off its own campaign at the municipal covered court of Calauag, Quezon. The campaign aims to gain a common understanding of the struggle for a child labor-free barangay, influence change, and identify the roles and solicit commitments of stakeholders, particularly government agencies, non-government organizations, private sector, local chief executives, and the parents of child laborers.
Mr. Virgilio T. Magsino, DOLE QPO Head, discussed the concept of the campaign for a child labor-free barangay while Mr. Jerwin Navarro, Calauag-MSWDO talked about strategies on how to free the child laborers. BM Obispo, Ms. Leyson of PSWDO, Ms. Milagros Mata – Assistant Regional Director of DOLE and Calauag Mayor Luisito Visorde gave messages encouraging the participating child laborers to continue going back to school.
The PSWDO represented by Ms. Sonia Layson, Ms. Nancy Ilagan and Ms.Josephine Monreal; ILO-Quezon represented by Ms.Cecil Colarina; QPPO represented by Ms. Elane Eleazar, and BM Alona Obispo are the provincial partners of the DOLE – QPO in this campaign.
The presence and active participation of the LGU headed by Mayor Luisito Visorde and Vice-mayor Ernesto C. Olviga, the barangay councils of the six participating barangays, the DepEd headed by DepEd coordinator Mr. Arsenio Casino are expressed commitment that they will actively pursue the campaign in their municipality.
The activity ended by the signing of the participants of the Declaration of Commitment and the signing by the Barangay Captains of the participating 6 barangays to the Commitment to Action to Attain a Child Labor – Free Barangay. These documents were discussed by Ms. Teresa Pamela Palma with the 6 barangay captains a day before the campaign launch.
