Some 1,798 children from 33 barangays benefitted from the Department of Labor and Employment’s Project Angel Tree (PAT) as the labor agency stepped up its anti-child labor campaign.
Regional Director Grace Ursua said its entire six field offices are implementing the PAT for the months of January and February as part of its child labor prevention and elimination program.
Through the PAT, the children who are considered at risk of child labor received or will receive gift packages consisting of educational supplies, groceries and clothes with the end goal of discouraging child labor among families and communities.
“As we enlighten children, parents and communities regarding the physical, social, psychological and economic ill effects of child labor, we aim to make them our partners in generating wider support to our anti-child labor advocacy,” Director Ursua said.
Citing reports from field offices, the regional director bared that the following areas benefitted from the PAT: Ilocos Norte – Balbuena and Cabaruan, Pinili, Ilocos Norte, 200 children and Sumader, Batac, Ilocos Norte, 98; Ilocos Sur – Dalawa, Alilem, Ilocos Sur, 150; Palali Sur and Cabaritan, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur, 75 and Banga, Sugpon, Ilocos Sur, 75; La Union – Cardiz, Baay and Cambaly, Bagulin, La Union, 180; Corooy, Santol, La Union, 60 and Victoria, Luna, La Union, 60; Central, Pangasinan - Lomboy and Mamalingling, Dagupan City, 120 and Angio, Aramal, Tocok, San Fabian, Pangasinan, 180; Eastern, Pangasinan – Poblacion, Dilan-Paurido, San Vicente East, San Vicente West, Cayambanan, Catablan,
Nancamaliran East, Nancamaliran West, Bayaoas, Urdaneta City, 100 and Gualsic and Macayo, Alcala, Pangasinan, 200; Western Pangasinan - Villlacorta, Mabini, Pangasinan, 100; Maniboc and Pangapisan, Lingayen, Pangasinan, 100 and San Jose and Baybay, Aguilar, Pangasinan, 100.
For Alcala’s barangays Gualsic and Macayo, “Operation Tuli” was also carried out by the DOH at the Gualsic Barangay Health Center, complementing the DOLE’s angel tree activity.
Director Ursua said the child labor prevention and elimination program of the DOLE is being implemented in cooperation with other government agencies, local government units, academe, private companies, labor organizations, non-government organizations and others. END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez
