Iligan City --- In line with the Labor Month celebration, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), through its Project Angel Tree, donated school supplies to some 700 working children in Barangay Kabacsanan last 16 May 2014 and some 514 working children in Barangay Pugaan, Iligan City last 23 May 2014.
The working children were identified and profiled through DOLE-X Lanao del Norte Provincial Field Office’s (LDN PFO) efforts through the Profiling of Vulnerable Workers in the different barangays of Iligan City.
“It is the aim of the Department that all Filipino children will continue their education and stay away from hazardous tasks that will endanger their lives and health,” Remegio D. Cabañog, LDN PFO Provincial Head expressed.
Project Angel Tree aims to gather and grant the wishes of child laborers through the building up of a network of patrons and supporters of the national efforts against child labor. Donors, benefactors, contributors, and sponsors of the program are called angels. Services under the program include food, clothing, shelter, mentoring, livelihood, educational and medical assistance and other work and training opportunities for target child worker-beneficiaries.
To prevent and eliminate child labor with the full support of the barangay leaders and the community, the respective barangay captains (Brgy. Captain Ramil Andilab of Kabacsanan and Brgy. Captain Maris Amit of Pugaan) executed a Memorandum of Agreement with DOLE-X with then Regional Director, Atty. Alan M. Macaraya, declaring the said barangays as “Child Labor Free Barangay” in accordance with Republic Act 9231 and the Philippines Program Against Child Labor.
The Child Labor-Free Barangay campaign, launched by the DOLE in July 2012, seeks to bring down to the community level--the barangay, the basic geo-political unit--the campaign against child labor, foster common understanding on, and gain public support for, the DOLE Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program.
The campaign conducted was feasible with the combined efforts of the Federation of Family Welfare Committees, Tripartite Industrial Peace Council, Federation of Democratic Labor Organization, its Rotary Club, some private companies and its Local Government Unit.
