Christmas is a season for celebrating the birth of Christ and spreading joy and love to one and all. It is an exciting time for children for Christmas means toys and candies from Jolly Old St Nick. It also means endless hours going to bazaars searching for that perfect gift to loved ones.
In the eyes of a little boy named Christian Rey Necaradas, 7 of of Bgy. Dila, Bay, Laguna there is neither twinkle nor excitement for Christmas. Abandoned by their father, his family survives on income derived from selling vegetables and working for other households. While other kids want toys and candies for Christmas, Christian only wants new clothes for there is little time for play and candies.
There was a buzz of excitement on December 11, 2015 when barangay officials gathered Christian and other children in their barangay and travelled to Malaban Elementary School in Biñan, Laguna.
At first Christian was uneasy mingling with other children. Like him, the other children were nervous and silent in their chairs. They were there for an activity but could not grasp what it means. Even when the program started they were still silent.
Everything changed when DOLE Laguna Director Milagros Mata stood up and explained the reason why Christian and the other children were gathered at the school. The children grew excited and attentive.
“Angel Tree?” Christian mumbled to himself when he heard PD Mata explain the DOLE Program of giving cheer and hope to children at risk or exposed to child labor by distributing school supplies to keep them in school.
Christian felt what it is like to be a kid again when PD Mata told them that the DOLE in partnership with the Laguna Labor Management Council Inc. (LLMCI) and with the generosity of companies in Laguna will be giving school supplies and gifts. He and the other kids applauded when it was announced that they will be going to Enchanted Kingdom for free.
He never felt happier the longest on that day. Christian could not contain his excitement when he received his bag of goodies. He stood up proud and volunteered for parlor games held at Enchanted Kingdom. Suddenly he had the twinkle in his eye like other kids during Christmas!
