Life of little ones are destroyed when child labor is employed.
On June 15, 2016, fifty child laborers were provided a complete package of school supplies to include pencils, notebooks, pens, crayons and other supplies during the Project Angel Tree in SM City Gensan in celebration of the World Day against Child Labour. This year’s theme: End Child Labor in Supply Chains!
Project Angel Tree aims to provide the wishes of child laborers in partnership with patrons and supporters who are referred to as angels. Angels during the event were Gentuna, Holy Trinity College, SM City Gensan and the Tripartite Industrial Peace Council of Gensan.
DOLE and its Project Angel Tree promotes continuity of education of these young laborers. It encourages children to be in school and refrain from going back to laborious activities especially during school season.
Barangays Lagao, San Isidro and Fatima have profiled child laborers in their area. In Brgy. Fatima, parents of these child laborers have been provided livelihood starter kits in order to encourage them to provide for the children’s education and not to prompt their children back to child labor such as car washing, fish-vending, scavenging for junk and scrap iron to name a few.
In his message, OIC-RD Albert Gutib encouraged the children to stay in school, inspiring them of a good life ahead if they have finished education. He also addressed the parents to remain supportive of their children’s desire for continuing education. He mentioned that the DOLE is always here, along with other government agencies and the Local Government Units for convergence purposes for the protection of children.
Brgy. Fatima Chairperson Josephine Matobato has expressed her gratitude to DOLE for being supportive to the barangay, and for always being able to download programs and services to the constituents of the city. SDumalay
