DOLE “Angel Tree” Brings Joy to 120 Children in Dagupan’s Island Barangay of Lomboy and Mamaling

It was like Christmas at the start of the year for 120 children of barangays Lomboy and Mamalingling in Dagupan City as the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1 distributed giftson January 8.

Regional Director Grace Ursua led the giving of gift packages which consisted of educational supplies, food and t-shirts.  She was joined byCentral Pangasinan Field Office Head Engracio Bailon, Technical Services Support Division Head Honorina Baga, Dagupan City Social Welfare and Development Officer Lea Aquino, Lomboy Punong Barangay Arsenio Santillan, Mamalingling Punong Barangay Sonny Tuates and some regional and CPFO staff.

Director Ursua said the activity is part of the labor agency’s Project Angel Tree (PAT) which primarily aims to discourage child labor among children and their parents or guardians.

She said children identified to be vulnerable, at risk or engaged in child labor are the target beneficiaries of the project.

“We are happy that child labor, especially the worst forms,is not prevalent in this region. However, we recognize that poverty is still the underlying reason for its existence. Our efforts at the DOLE-1 are geared towards preventing its occurrence,”she told.

The Regional Director said the PAT is being implemented alongside other interventions such as livelihood assistance, establishment and strengthening of anti-child labor mechanisms and networks, educational assistance, advocacy and others under the DOLE Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program.
