Children Call to Action – Build a “Child-Friendly Philippines”

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) led by Executive Director Brenda S. Vigo will hold the 2012 Philippine National Children’s Conference (PNCC) with the theme “Child Friendly Philippines: A Caring and Protective Society for Children” on April 16-18, 2012 at the Lancaster Hotel, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.

Children aged 10-17 years old from various organizations and children’s association nationwide will participate in this three-day event.  The PNCC will serve as a venue for children to have an appreciation of current and emerging issues affecting them.  It is also a platform for children’s consultation on how they can be actively engaged by government in addressing the issues identified.

The activity specifically aims to achieve a common understanding on Child Friendly Philippines:  A Caring and Protective Society for Children and how this can be achieved by various sectors at all levels.  The Conference will be an opportunity for children participants to be given appropriate information on the current situation and emerging issues on children at the national and local level, and for them to come up with a children’s plan of action and statement.  It will also elect children delegates to the Second ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF) to be held in Singapore in June 2012. The ACF is a mechanism for child participation in the ASEAN structure.

Emerging issues and threats to making the Philippines a child-friendly society will be discussed such as Violence Against Children,  Internet Safety Access, Impact of Media on the Young Minds, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and How Children Can Help, Children in the Changing Climate and the ASEAN Children’s Forum (ACF). The participants will be given an opportunity to navigate the ACF Website.

The event will be graced by MTRCB Chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares, UNICEF-Philippines Country Representative Mr. Tomoo Hozumi, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos, DSWD Assistant Secretary Florita R. Villar,  GMA 7 Candice Montenegro, among others.
