The beneficiaries are children of the recipients of DOLE’s Kabuhayan sa mga Magulang ng Batang Manggagawa or KASAMA program in 2013 whose main source of income depends on the tons of waste being dumped daily in the Calajunan dumpsite.
The fund used to purchase the school supplies came from the proceeds of the DOLE- initiated Fun Run for a Cause which was part of the Labor Month Celebration held on May 24 at the Megaworld Business Park in Mandurriao district, Iloilo City in partnership with the Network of Career Guidance Advocates of Iloilo and Guimaras (NCGA-IG).
The said activity generated a total of P13,005 net income which was apportioned to its intended beneficiaries such as the group of children who are at risk of becoming child laborers in an identified area and the NCGA-IG.
During the turnover ceremony, each child received a kit containing 4 notebooks, 1 pack of art paper, 1 ruler, 2 erasers, 1 drawing book, 3 Mongol pencils, 3 ballpoint pens, 1 box crayon (24’s), 1 pair of scissors, 1 pencil case, 1roll intermediate pad, 1 pencil sharpener, and 1 plastic envelope with handle at a total cost of P200 per kit.
The children who are all enrolled at the Feliciano Hava Kelly Elementary School in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao, Iloilo City were elated with the school supplies they received.
One of them was 10-year-old Kent L. Seyas who is in Grade 3. According to Kent, the turnover was done just in time for the start of classes.
“I am so happy that I was given these school supplies. These can really help me in my studies,” he said.
Kent wants to become a policeman, and he wishes that he could achieve his dream so he can help his parents and maintain peace and order in his community.
Another recipient was Lawrence Atiyon, a 10-year-old grade two pupil.
Just like Kent, Lawrence also wants to become a policeman and the school supplies he got from DOLE will serve as a stepping stone in realizing his dream.
“These school supplies can really help me in my studies,” he said.
On the other hand, Mrs. Genelyn Obaredes shared her happiness when she learned that her daughter, Kimberly Nicole, was also one of the beneficiaries of the educational kits.
Nicole then was in need of certain school supplies, and the items she received completed her list.
“I am really thankful that she (Nicole) was given these items because we have not bought all the school supplies that she needed,” Genelyn said.
When asked what her dream for Nicole is, she replied she wishes that the latter finishes her studies and get a job.
The beneficiaries of this Fun Run for a Cause project were identified based on the results of the DOLE’s convergence program with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with regard to the implementation of the 4Ps program wherein their families belonged to the first batch of beneficiaries in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
