The municipalities of Nasugbu, Lian, Balayan, and Tuy all situated in District 1 located in the northern part of Batangas led the fun-filled yet meaningful event to conclude Region IV- annual celebration of the “World Day Against Child Labor”. Inspired by this year’s theme, “End child labor in supply chains: It’s everyone’s business!”, over 200 representatives, barangay officials, parents and their children, from the nine barangays of District 1 involved in the Child Labor-Free Project of the Department participated in the activities that started at 8:00 a.m. of June 25, 2016.
The event kicked off with an advocacy walk on the streets of Nasugbu that ended with a casual program at Plaza De Roxas. Representatives from ABK3 LEAP (Pag-Aaral ng Bata para sa Kinabukasan: Livelihoods, Education, Advocacy and Protection to Reduce Child Labor in Sugarcane areas), PNP (Philippine National Police)-Nasugbu, DTI (Department of Trade and Industry), and MSWDO (Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office)-Nasugbu expressed their commitment to the project to eliminate child labor. The DOLE-Batangas Provincial Office, headed by its Provincial Director Predelma M. Tan awarded Certificates of Appreciation to each barangay for its continuous support and involvement in the said project. District 1 is known for its biggest contribution in the sugarcane industry in the Province of Batangas, and where two large sugar centrals are located.
The participants were delighted by the intermission number rendered by the children of the Lian Theater Group about their aspiration of being in a child labor-free community and the fun games and raffle prizes from ABK3 LEAP. The activity concluded with a simple feast.
