In response to the alarming condition of the children working in the marble industry in the Province of Romblon, the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office IV-B (DOLE IV-B) through the DOLE Romblon Field Office conducted a two-day Anti-Child Labor Campaign on September 20-21, 2011 at the Casa Joebelle, Romblon, Romblon.
Through the initiative of OIC-Director Zen Angara, the activity was successfully conducted focusing on Child Labor Prevention and Elimination.
During the first day of the activity, it was attended by the Academe, Barangay Officials and representatives from the Local Government Unit of Romblon. Willingness from them to participate for the total prevention and elimination of child labor in Romblon was seen through their active involvement on the discussions and signing of the Commitment for Anti-Child Labor Campaign.
On the following day, twenty eight child laborers became the participants of the activity. They were all workers from the marble quarry. Most of them were unfortunately not given the privilege of going to school due to poverty. As they were accompanied by their parents, topics on what is child labor and the rights of children were discussed and explained to them. They were given knowledge on what would be the possible effects and results of child labor to them as they continued to work in the marble quarry.
Meanwhile, to entertain them by means of recreational activities, DOLE Staff prepared fun games for them. They were all happy getting involved in the games while their parents were watching them. During that moment, they were all real children-playing and enjoying their childhood.
For the next step, a follow-up event which is the organization of the parents of the child laborers is already planned to be conducted this coming October. This is to eventually provide livelihood assistance thru Project GRACE together with the Municipal Government of Romblon.
