Awarding of the 2011 Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities at Malacañang

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) initiated the Presidential Award for the Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities pursuant to Executive Order No. 184 (CWC), series of 1999. This is in support for the Convention on the Rights of the C0hild (CRC) as the Philippine government ratified the CRC on July 26, 1990.

The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) initiated the Presidential Award for the Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities pursuant to Executive Order No. 184 (CWC), series of 1999. This is in support for the Convention on the Rights of the C0hild (CRC) as the Philippine government ratified the CRC on July 26, 1990.

The Presidential Award is considered as a self-assessment mechanism of the level of child-friendliness of a particular city or municipality that gives recognition to LGUs that put in place a “child-friendly” environment and upholds the rights of Filipino children to survival, development, protection and participation.  The award is conferred to deserving local government units in recognition of their vital role in the sustained promotion of child rights and in ensuring child-friendly governance.

There are five categories for the Presidential Award, namely 4th - 6th Class Municipality, 1st – 3rd Class Municipality, Component City, Independent Component City, Highly Urbanized City.  National awardees per category receive a Presidential Trophy and P300,000.00 cash prize. A Hall of Fame award is conferred to three-time consecutive national awardee and is given Hall of Fame Presidential Trophy and P 500,000.00.

For 2011, National Awarding Ceremonies of the Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities was conducted on Thursday, 27 October 2011 at the Rizal Hall, Malacañan, Manila with the President of the Philippines, His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III conferring the Award assisted by Honorable DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo, Honorable DSWD Secretary and CWC Chairperson Corazon Juliano Soliman and CWC Executive Director Brenda S. Vigo.
